So, what exactly is a PLN or Personal Learning Network?
A Personal Learning Network is a way that we can extend our
own knowledge far beyond a typical classroom setting. A PLN also extends beyond
the face-to-face setting of networking that has been the norm up until now.
It is no longer necessary to be at one physical place to
meet, converse about a topic, research, conference, or learn. With Web 2.0
tools, it is possible to travel the world without ever leaving your office or
room.
In the past if we needed to learn something for a specific
purpose, we would need to read a book or take a course. We could also ask a
co-worker or fellow classmate. We essentially were building a PLN without
realizing it but on a small limited scale. We could only utilize what resources
we had immediately available to us.
Now with tools such as twitter, facebook, blogs, iTunesU,
online libraries, and much more we can build networks for learning at our
finger tips!
My PLN Plan…
I already belong to facebook so I will start to use this
tool to connect to organizations and other members that might be of use in my
learning quest. I will join twitter and seek out information that I can use to
learn about my topics of interest.
I plan on reading and commenting on blogs and start
utilizing more forums. I will focus on IT related issues as well as teaching
IT.
Until next time…
