Browsing the Web – Chapter 2 Reading Assignment

In chapter 2 of the text “Discovering the Internet”, I read about the characteristics of a web page, the role of IP addresses, how to use a web browser and how to change the options of a web browser, and the risks with safeguards of web browsing.

In my lectures about this content I discuss the same materials as this text. I also discuss the importance of protecting your identity and personal information online.

The text describes the home page as the primary web page for a website. The home page is also known as the index page. When we visit a website by going to the main page, we land on the home page.

A website is a collection of web pages and other media that is related and connected by “links” or hyperlinks. Most web pages are designed with similarities as to not confuse visitors. Generally the top of the page contains the logo or banner, which is followed by the body of the page. In the body there is generally text, images and other media, site navigation, and links to related material. The body is followed by the footer area, which generally will have copyright information.

Websites reside on web servers. The client will request web content from the server, the server will respond with the requested web content.

For the client to request a web page it uses a web browser. The web browser uses a domain name and URL to find the IP address for the server that will contain the content that is requested.
